I don't even know if there's a nice, safe, diplomatic way to say this, but this compilation from SquidHat Records called Punk Sexy: A Las Vegas Punk Tribute To Prince is just not very Punk, and just not very good.
Sure, you got some ragin' Punk versions of Prince songs from Local stalwarts Guilty By Association (Let's Go Crazy) and new pups on the block New Cold War (I Would Die 4 U), but other than those 2 tunes, the rest of the album is just a mish-mash of girl group sass (The Negative Nancys do Sister and The Dirty Panties do Raspberry Beret), middle of the road 70's AM radio background music (The People's Whiskey doing I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, Mercy Music doing Purple Rain, and The Quitters doing Jack U Off), boring Sci-Fi instrumental Surf Tiki tunes (The New Waves do Erotic City and Dr. Phobic And The Phobic-Tones do When Doves Cry), and vanity projects from people associated with the label (The Mustang Ranch Hands, The SquidHat All Stars, and The Heiz). That's it. There's nothing else going on here. Honorable mention to Franks & Deans for turning in one of the whitest sounding, Wonder bread loving honky version of Jungle Love that I've ever heard in my life. It's really, really soulless and bad, but cleverly mixes in various other 'jungle' titled songs like Welcome To The Jungle by Guns N' Roses, Kool & The Gang's Jungle Boogie, and some other jungle song that escapes me mind right now. Whatever. When the most talked about song on a Punk compilation is a mish-mash of boring banality, that can't be a good thing, and this comp ain't no good thing. Shame that this tribute album to Prince sort of became a memorial album to him after his recent passing. Buy this if you're a Local Punk purist. Buy it if you're a vinyl collector, because the purple vinyl is fucking sweet looking. Just don't buy it expecting to hear something good, ya dig?
