Written by GE 138. Demos... you know I love them! :-) So who is Failed Mutation, you ask? Well, I'll tell ya - they are a band that's kicking up a snowball or two in the thriving metropolitan Punk Rock scene of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, putting forth a melodic, grinding, chaotic wall of noise that's offset nicely by a female screamer on vocals. Reminds me a lot of Blatz... with a dash of the Zero Boys thrown in to make things interesting... kind of rudimentary but with a sense of urgency about it. The music is very aggressive and in your face sounding. I could see this band demanding your attention while they play live. I think they have a message or something... ;-) Anyways, my good friend Nikki Potatoes, who I've known since I caught her stealing beers from me @ East Side Joe's gigs when she was, I think, about 9 or 10 years old, plays bass in this band, and on Facebook she said her bands demo was available for purchase, so I PayPal'd some dinero to somebody in the band, and they sent me this lovely cassette tape in return. I had to check it out, you understand, and I'm glad I did, because it's pretty good. Definitely Punk as Fuck. Lots of the songs hover around the one minute mark, and it sounds like this recording was captured on an old boom box from the 80's, which is part of it's charm. I cleaned it up with Adobe Audition though... heh heh There's a couple of really catchy tunes on here, like opening song Can't Relate, and Play The Game is pretty good too, and they do a killer cover of Time To Stand by Deep Wound, which just gives them all sorts of Punk cred in my book! :-) The best song on here though has to be closing song The Greatest Quest, with that hypnotic bass line that drives the song into almost a nightmare like area of being. I like it. Cool stuff here. Sure would of been nice if this cassette came with some sort of a lyric sheet, because I'd love to know what the Singer is carrying on about, but oh well. Minor complaint at best. Anyways, check out this demo from Failed Mutation and support these youngsters who are musically where you once were 20 years ago. :-) Good job Nikki!
