Written by GE 138. I don't even know the point of giving this a write up. I have been extolling the virtues of The People's Whiskey ever since the first time I saw them, many, many moons ago, and I've had to explain this band to a lot of my friends, because they didn't get it, they didn't see why I was so crazy about this particular band. The songs are great, I'd tell them, so well written, musically brilliant and full of lyrics that were more than just a half hearted usage of a well worn rhyming dictionary. Just really listen to them the next time you see them, I'd tell people, and they did, they kept seeing them play, because they were gigging around hard, listening, watching them play, and slowly they started to get it. Slowly they became Fans. It's been glorious watching these guys grow and thrive and assert themselves musically here in the Vegas music scene, doing so while always loudly and proudly proclaiming that they were a Hendertucky band. Integrity. You know I love it! ;-) So yeah, here we have the debut full length release from The People's Whiskey, brought to you by the fine fellows @ Squid Hat Records, and from the opening face kick of the song Alley, all the way to the closing track on this disc, a snappy little dance ditty they call the Hendo 2-Step, the band takes you on the most enjoyable musical journey ever, going from the stomp and sneer of Punk to the arrogant drunken swagger of Rock N Roll to the heartbroken tenderness of Country, all in just over 45 minutes. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me. This CD sounds great. Kudos to everyone involved with making it sound so good. The guitars are crisp and well up in the mix, and Steve's guitar work is incredible. Cody's bass thunders along and pops when needed, Luis' drum work is beyond brilliant, and Justin's impassioned vocals make you wanna go up and give him a big ol' hug and buy him a beer... LOL I don't know what he's singing about, but on songs like Red Dress, Best Day I Never Had, or even Confession, which is an amazing song BTW, it sounds like he's just singing about one girl breaking his heart over and over and over again. Wish this thing came with a lyric sheet so I knew what he was carrying on about... LOL Hell, there's even a couple of full out Country songs on here that are all about heartbreak - Another Lonely Night, and Drunk Dial - and when I say Country, I'm talking the kind of Country that Mel Tillis or Conway Twitty would approve of, not this BS they call Country music nowadays, and these 2 Country songs sound good! No BS! They really sound good. There's not a bad track on here. Almost all of my favorite People's Whiskey songs are on here! Fist Fights & Miller Lites, Bar Esteem, Tall Can, Pills (love the changed ending), Empty Promises And Broken Dreams, Hell, it's almost like it's a greatest hits collection! hahahaha It takes a whole lotta balls to pull of something as brave as this, mixing up all these musical genres and influences into one mighty tasty green salad, but The People's Whiskey pull it off no problemo, and I for one couldn't be prouder of them for doing so. All the characteristics I had I told people this band possessed are on full display on this CD, and it's great to see them finally getting their music properly released. Now people outside of Las Vegas are going to get a chance to hear whet this band is all about, and they're gonna love it just as much as we do here in Sin City. This record is flawless. The one minor nitpick I have with it is that I'm not thanked on it! LOL Boooooooooooooooo. hahahahaha Oh well. Maybe I'll make the Thank You list on the next one, because, with the sheer musical talent shown on this stunning debut release, you know that there's plenty more music to come from The People's Whiskey, and I, for one, can't wait to hear it all.
