I forget how I found out about this compilation of Local Las Vegas bands. I think it was on Facebook somewhere. Looking at the artists listed, I had only heard of a few of them at the most, and none of them have anything to do with Punk Rock in the slightest way, so I was more than a bit apprehensive before I bought this off of some Bandcamp site. Yeah, I bought this - sue me. So I download it, unpack the zip file, load it up into my iTunes library, and give it a go. After listening to it once I can honestly say that it's not very good, and that's being polite about it. Every band on here is boring, mediocre and highly disappointing. I mean, I only bought this for the Tuesday After School song on here (Rage Against The Merch Guy) and it wasn't all that good. The other 2 bands on here that I had heard of, Joshua Judges Ruth and Amarionette, are more of that whiny, Emo Metal crap that's big amongst Scene clueless kids wearing tight pants with their hair combed over one eye. And the pretension shown by some bands on here, who shall remain nameless, is absolutely appalling. Cock Stars. The production quality is mixed, with some bands sounding better than others, and there isn't a stand out track on here worth mentioning. I'm glad this isn't my musical Scene. If it was, I might just cut my wrists and then write a song whining about it... heh heh This messy compilation is available from vegassounds.bandcamp.com/album at a pay-what-you-will price. I paid $1.38 for it... heh heh
If there's any band that can be allowed to just rest on their laurels and phone albums in at this point in their career it's Killing Joke. For what these guys have done to the musical landscape as we now know it, they should be allowed to do whatever the fuck they want and have people worship them like the Gods that they are but thankfully, they choose not to do that. They're still out there on the cutting edge, putting out albums years ahead of the curve full of music and thoughts and idea which will probably only be properly understood hundreds of years from now. This latest release shows the band still confrontational, vibrant and hard hitting as ever, musically painting individual soliloquies that ruminate on the end of the world, thus the album's title of MMXII - 2012 - the Mayan thing. Whatever. Everything you deserve and nothing you expect is on here musically, with songs running the gamut of sounding like funeral dirges (Pole Shift), headbanging classics (Glitch), Goth nightmare anthems (In Cythera) and, of course, ass kicking Killing Joke songs (Corporate Elect). Jaz Coleman and Co. are a group of misunderstood Geniuses and this latest release from them is outstanding and sits well with anything they've ever released. Very highly recommended.
