I've been rocking this band Hoax's stuff pretty hard as of late, after a friend of mine in L.A. saw them play recently and told me I might dig them and to check them out. He knows what I like, because this stuff is pretty good.  Hoax plays some beautiful, pissed off Punk / Hardcore stuff, ala Negative FX, Infest, or even Broken Bones at times, and they do it with an Intensity and Conviction that can only be found in the minds and souls of the Young. The songs on here are short, sweet, angry, borderline Metal offerings with single word titles such as Fear, Destroy, Hide, and Blind, and the Singer sounds like he's channeling one of Satan's minions every time he snarls / growls into the microphone.  Sounds painful, to say the least. There are no other backing vocals on this whatsoever. The only voice associated with Hoax is the singers, and that's pretty unsettling. Not the best sounding record I've ever heard. The music production could of been a bit better. Dirty, chainsaw guitars over thudding, plodding drums is a bit of a hard listen, and is there even bass on this thing? If there is, I can't hear it because it all just gets lost in the mix, which sounds like mud. Oh well, that's Punk Rock for ya! There's a whole movement on new Grindcore thing going on in L.A. right now, and Hoax is one of the better bands slugging it out in the toxic underground over there in the City of Angels, so if you get the chance, check out Hoax and see what you think about them. I like 'em, and I think you will too! :-)

I could seriously just start this review out by stating that this release is crucial in nature, with some of the most rocking, most creative, most impressive things to musically come out of Las Vegas since, well, since ever, come to think about it, and I could just tell you to rush out immediately and buy this on blind faith alone, but that would be too easy and besides, who listens to what I say anyways, right? So instead, I'm gonna try to give you some reasons as to why you should give this fantastic release a listen.  I mean, that's a reviewers job, right? Sure it is! Well, first off, if you know nothing about the Quitters, let me give you a few words about them - Brilliant, Inventive, Diehard Punk motherfuckers. And I don't mean Punk like the generic Hot Topic / Buttflap poseurs, no, I mean Punk as in, a Life, for Life, but even that's a bit limiting. They're more than that, better than that, and to pigeonhole them into that limited sub genre of Music would be a huge disservice. The Quitters rock. Period. They're like the Dead Kennedys meet Frank Zappa in a hash cafe in Amsterdam while hanging out listening to Miles Davis. Songs on this release, like the opening track Defibrillator/Pentazoid, show how the band can just change directions on a whim, going from math rock to thrash punk to jazzy improv in a split second. It doesn't sound like it should work but it does. Kudos to Miqah for coming up with some really creative ass drum lines that bring it all together. Everybody's playing sounds good on here. Great sounding, and the musicianship is top notch. The 2nd guitar player the Quitters have been jamming around with as of late has really helped bring the bands sound to full fruition, and I'll never get sick of Marc's vocals - they're just the perfect mix of snot and attitude, I swear! There's soooo many good tracks on here that it's hard to just pick a few to highlight, but if I had to choose, I'd say that the best songs on here are Ex Ordo Misdiosis (which I get all the time, BTW), the title track, (both of which clock in at over 6 minutes each... UGH!!), Born Again Atheist, ISWID, and Taught To Hate. I can't stand that Hipster song on here that they did the video for though.... sooooooo, soooo lame I can't even fathom what on Earth they were smoking when they came up with that concept. Whatever. One trendy song does NOT a record make, and Contributing To Erosion, the 2nd (I believe) release from The Quitters, is one for the history books. One of the best releases this year, that's for sure. Also released on beautiful blue vinyl, which just makes this release all the more special. Seek this album out immediately. You shan't be disappointed, I kid you not. Kudos boys, Kudos! This is a great release that just gets better and better after every listen.
