by GE 138. Billing themselves as a 'desert surfing trio' from Las Vegas, the Desert Island Boys play an rudimentary style of surf music meshed with stoner doom metal riffs and avant-garde jazz runs with an occasional outburst of some ska licks thrown in just to fuck with you and it's all topped with some nasally ass whiny vocals and terrible rhyme schemes to bring it all home in one very bad Dead Milkmen-ish package. This band is at the forefront of bands breaking out of the backyard party circuit here in Vegas, where things like originality or tight musical performances are not as much of a priority as recycling riffs or partying and jamming on some tasty tunes with your friends is. Apathetic? Maybe. Doesn't mean that it can't be good, not everything has to be so serious ya know, and while for the most part this album is pretty much heavy reverb stoner surf jam filler, which I'm pretty sure sounds great after a few Natty Ice's and some righteous and tasty dabs from the bong, there are a few standout tracks on here which gives me hope for the future of this band. Brewsing is pretty catchy, Mooch Gooch is interesting, and Atomic would be great if it had words to it. It's one of 3 or 4 instrumentals the band threw on this release, either because they like instrumentals or because they got too fucked up and couldn't write lyrics to them. Either or, this self-titled release from the Desert Island Boys is a good step towards establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with here in the Vegas scene. While not my cup of tea I don't hate it, which I guess says something, right? Right! 😎 Available from Asteroid M Records.
