Written by GE 138. I don't even know the point of giving this a write up. I have been extolling the virtues of The People's Whiskey ever since the first time I saw them, many, many moons ago, and I've had to explain this band to a lot of my friends, because they didn't get it, they didn't see why I was so crazy about this particular band. The songs are great, I'd tell them, so well written, musically brilliant and full of lyrics that were more than just a half hearted usage of a well worn rhyming dictionary. Just really listen to them the next time you see them, I'd tell people, and they did, they kept seeing them play, because they were gigging around hard, listening, watching them play, and slowly they started to get it. Slowly they became Fans. It's been glorious watching these guys grow and thrive and assert themselves musically here in the Vegas music scene, doing so while always loudly and proudly proclaiming that they were a Hendertucky band. Integrity. You know I love it! ;-) So yeah, here we have the debut full length release from The People's Whiskey, brought to you by the fine fellows @ Squid Hat Records, and from the opening face kick of the song Alley, all the way to the closing track on this disc, a snappy little dance ditty they call the Hendo 2-Step, the band takes you on the most enjoyable musical journey ever, going from the stomp and sneer of Punk to the arrogant drunken swagger of Rock N Roll to the heartbroken tenderness of Country, all in just over 45 minutes. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me. This CD sounds great. Kudos to everyone involved with making it sound so good. The guitars are crisp and well up in the mix, and Steve's guitar work is incredible. Cody's bass thunders along and pops when needed, Luis' drum work is beyond brilliant, and Justin's impassioned vocals make you wanna go up and give him a big ol' hug and buy him a beer... LOL I don't know what he's singing about, but on songs like Red Dress, Best Day I Never Had, or even Confession, which is an amazing song BTW, it sounds like he's just singing about one girl breaking his heart over and over and over again. Wish this thing came with a lyric sheet so I knew what he was carrying on about... LOL Hell, there's even a couple of full out Country songs on here that are all about heartbreak - Another Lonely Night, and Drunk Dial - and when I say Country, I'm talking the kind of Country that Mel Tillis or Conway Twitty would approve of, not this BS they call Country music nowadays, and these 2 Country songs sound good! No BS! They really sound good. There's not a bad track on here. Almost all of my favorite People's Whiskey songs are on here! Fist Fights & Miller Lites, Bar Esteem, Tall Can, Pills (love the changed ending), Empty Promises And Broken Dreams, Hell, it's almost like it's a greatest hits collection! hahahaha It takes a whole lotta balls to pull of something as brave as this, mixing up all these musical genres and influences into one mighty tasty green salad, but The People's Whiskey pull it off no problemo, and I for one couldn't be prouder of them for doing so. All the characteristics I had I told people this band possessed are on full display on this CD, and it's great to see them finally getting their music properly released. Now people outside of Las Vegas are going to get a chance to hear whet this band is all about, and they're gonna love it just as much as we do here in Sin City. This record is flawless. The one minor nitpick I have with it is that I'm not thanked on it! LOL Boooooooooooooooo. hahahahaha Oh well. Maybe I'll make the Thank You list on the next one, because, with the sheer musical talent shown on this stunning debut release, you know that there's plenty more music to come from The People's Whiskey, and I, for one, can't wait to hear it all. Buy this release immediately and check out one of the best bands in Nevada - straight outta Hendo ya know! Written by Karl Bakla. Recently Floyd asked me, "Do you like the song Plastic Bomb?" Annoyed, I informed him for the 666th time that I only listen to the record Pick Your King by Poison Idea. I explained to him that I didn't give a fuck about some song called Plastic Bomb that is by some shitty band. He informed me it was a Poison Idea song. This was a shock, I had no idea that Poison Idea recorded or released anything besides Pick Your King. So I looked into this song & it was good, but mostly it just reinforced my decision to exclusively listen to Pick Your King. This is a lifestyle choice I made 24 years ago, after hearing the Discharge album Grave New World. Did they get King Diamond to sing on that piece of shit? To shorten this long story, after hearing Plastic Bomb I decided that it might be OK to come out of my Punk music bomb shelter & hear something new, so I ripped opened a fanzine & decided to check out Replica. When I first heard this 7" I was wasted & had no business being anywhere but in bed sleeping, but fuck it… I am an adult. When I put this record on, I immediately started to sing-a-long to the song Strings, "Coming from my arse! Coming from my arse! Coming from my arse!" Fuck yeah! Hardcore bands usually don't have lyrics that good! When I listened to the record a few days later I realized they were screaming, "Coming from my eyes!" What we have here are 5 Hardcore Punk tunes that are on the verge of drifting into Metal territory, but luckily stay on the Punk side of things. Hot Lixx Hulalan recorded this & it really shows in the guitar sound. I liked this record a lot & I assume the Crusty guy who brought his dog into the mosh pit would feel the same. I know I said this before, but I am gonna say it again, "Fuck the Crusty guy who brought his dog into the mosh pit!" If you like Antischism, Appalachian Terror Unit, Aus Rotten, or are just a fan of bands with names that begin with the letter 'A', this is for you! Some of you may call "BULLSHIT" on me and accuse me of listening to other records besides Pick Your King & cite the other Music Reviews that can be found on the onethirtyeight.org website as proof. Well, the truth is, I didn't listen to those records, I just looked at the record covers while watching Sons Of Anarchy & wrote my feelings about the episode I just watched. With that said, I didn't cry over Tara. The vinyl is available from the Prank Records website by clicking here. The first song from this release is available as a free download, and you can go here to check that out. 'Like' the band on Facebook by clicking here.
Written by GE 138. I normally don't review things that came out a few years ago, but since the band was nice enough to send me the link to this, I decided to give it a write up, and I'm glad I did, because it's pretty damn good. Yeah, No More Saints is a sticker that I've seen plastered around at various bathrooms and walls in Punk clubs here in town for a while now, but I never saw the band perform and had no idea who they were. Still don't, actually, but these 5 songs of blistering, in your face Hardcore, ala seminal bands like Battalion Of Saints or Good Riddance, make me wish I did. The overall sound of this release is loud and furious, guitars are crunchy, bass is rumbly, and the drums sound like machinery. Nice. With song titles like Hypocrisy Of Pious Men, Destroyer Of Empathy, and Melatonin Backlash (which lasts a grand total of 37 seconds), I'm going to assume that this band has a little bit more substance in their song topics than the usual beer/girls/skateboarding/beer motif offered by most Punk bands nowadays. Man, whatever these songs are about, the Singer sure sounds pissed off about whatever it is that he's yelling/screaming about. The more I listen to this, the more I like it. Good stuff from No More Saints. Check it out and see what you think of it. Highly recommended. :-) |
