Written by Karl Bakla. ![]() It is quite often I hear awesome new “PUNK” records, by Punk I mean all of the sub-genres that fall beneath that umbrella, but it is very rare that I get to hear an awesome new Punk Rock record (or in this case a CD). This week on my daily commute I got to hear an awesome Punk Rock CD from The Civilians. On my initial listen I thought, fuck yeah, this is good, but as I got more familiar with the album, it grew on me more and more, and by the end of the week I even started having favorite songs (We Survive, Blue Bloods, I Ride On…etc.). It is safe to say that I have jammed this at least twenty times. I know that The Civilians are going for the whole Oi!/Street Punk thing, but I think The Civilians would appeal to PUNKS that are usually turned off by that genre. The working class lyrics are there, but they never fall into the meat head territory, for example there are no songs about having to kill someone because they refuse to learn. No shit, I have a record by an Oi! band that sings about that, I also have one that sings about beating someone with a wrench, and another one that sings about dropping a bomb on an entire region, but this review isn’t about those records. Also unlike a lot of Oi! bands you have variety on here, which I hear is the spice of life. The ten songs on this disc keep the Street Punk template but keep things interesting with seasonings of ‘77, Fullerton, & Irish drinking music. I say, “check this shit out!” Available from The Civilians at every single gig they play, so grab one while you can. Available on limited edition vinyl very, very soon. You can stream this release for free on Sound Cloud by clicking here. "Like" The Civilians on Facebook by clicking here. Thank you come again. :-)
